I've been an artist and educator for over 20 years. I'm also an avid gamer. A few years ago I decided to combine these two passions with a second BFA in video game design and now I'm a freelance environmental artist in NYC!
I love NYC's indie gaming community. Meeting so many people passionate about making an playing games inspired me to return to my education roots and begin sharing the 3D and 2D techniques I've learned and perfected over the last few years.

Substance Designer - Animated Procedural Battery Gauge (Powerbar)
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.4 года назад
In this video we take a look at two ways to make a procedural animated power bar material. First we'll use the Pixel Processor Node to drive an animated gauge that moves and changes color from green to red as a power battery depletes. Then we'll use the same power level parameter to change an emissive indicator light from red to green and back again.
Substance Designer - Floating Leaves Animation (pt.2)
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.4 года назад
In this 2 part video we take a look at how to make leaves floating on water. We use FX Maps and a series of interrelated functions to get them to float in a seemingly random manner. We'll also have a series of input parameters to adjust the movement of the leaves and flow of the water. In part 2, we add input parameters to the functions we created in part 1 and finish off the material.

In this 2 part video we take a look at how to make leaves floating on water. We use FX Maps and a series of interrelated functions to get them to float in a seemingly random manner. We'll also have a series of input parameters to adjust the movement of the leaves and flow of the water. In part 1, we set up the basic functions and initial animations, using placeholder constants.
Substance Designer - Ice Flow (part 2)
Просмотров 1 тыс.4 года назад
In this two-part lesson we take a look at building a stylized ice flow. We'll be using Gradient Maps not just for our colors, but also grayscale masks. We'll also look at how we can use external functions to power our animations and simplify our workflow. Part 1: We fine tune the colors, normals and heights

Substance Designer - Using Waves for More Complex Material Animations
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.5 лет назад
In this video we take at an actual project I'm working on, and how to use wave nodes to create very specific timed animations on a sheet of laid out uv's. Because this isn't a tiled material, the animation sequence is driven entirely by a wave function that uses masks to animate the uv sheet.
Substance Designer - Procedural Carved Wood (pt.4 - the color)

Channel Announcement - Introducing SD Basics!
I've been having trouble finding a good tutorial on SSS for Substance Designer. Thanks for making this!
Nice material thanks for sharing 😊. Will definitely check other videos.
Wow cool, and you can use this to do skew which was what I wanted to do! Pity the docs for Designer are so bad. Lucky we have nice people like you showing us how to really use the software cos adobe sure as hell aren't bothered
Спасибо огромное!!!
У вас отличные уроки!!! Жалко вы это дело забросили.
Thanks a lot!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH
thx
Old info but still very relevant! Thanks
thanks a bunch 💐
this was extremely helpful, good job
thanks, m8
It's funny... you seem to make so much sense... but there's so much that you're not telling us... so following along is ... not possible.
Great Tutorials! Thank you

Good to know Chris is a he/him, wouldn't have guessed that one XD...All the funny business aside, I'm so sad you stopped posting on this channel.
This tutorial is absolute gold. It's really sad fx maps are basically not touched upon in youtube tutorials.
Is there a way use the $time on the offset of the transform 2D function?
Please do more of these.
I really appreciate you dabeling into the more obscure functions of substance designer, at least they seem very obscure to me. I never knew you could animate in substance designer, nor did I even know about fx maps.
5 years ago and still what i needed, thank you.
Honestly great stuff. However I am wondering why you would ever do that? Usually the watermovement is shaderdriven anyway and I dont even know if you can export that stuff in any other engines. But nevertheless impressive stuff
i can't find my timeline where is it
This was a fantastic tutorial! Thank you sooo much!
Thanks!
Great tutorial, I get to the FX mode part and it's just black with an error message
Hi! This is a great tutorial! I just made it, but I'm running into problems to use this as a material and render my scene, do you know how i can import it to Marmoset or other software? Thank you so much this tutorial!
Thanks! I had never thought to use directional blur like this. Expanded my toolset.
gorgeous intro Ty for this video 👍
I appreciate you narrating everything! Brand new to Substance and this was a bit of a whirlwind but with countless pauses and rewinds it's doable! It was exactly what I was looking for.
just, wow!
WoW, the intro !! Masterpiece :P
Fixed it! Thank you so much!
Wow this is incredible!! thank you so much for sharing this information. It's exactly what I needed!
Hi @Pixel Gym, I curious that do i able to export it as animated texture (sequences) for games VFX purposes? Thanks for advise
cool, but this violet-magenta hue on the crest is slightly embarasing XD Maybe a reflection from the hdri?
Thanks for the tutorials, I hope you're alright, it's always sad if you find a great channel and than find out that they haven't uploaded for ages
Thanks for your concern. Everything's good, just life...and my game. These videos actually take up a lot of time/bandwidth to make. I've actually been thinking of starting them back up. (Only not quite so often). Kind of share my adventures in making my robot puzzle game. So stay tuned!
@@PixelGym RUclips stopped notifying me on my phone about comments, hence why I noticed it so late. I'm very happy to hear that you're around and doing fine. I would love to hear/see more about the dev journey with your game :) But I can also imagine that these tutorials and such are quite consuming like you have said.
Здравствуйте. Вы понимаете по-русски? Огромное спасибо за уроки. Один вопрос задаю многим, но никто не отвечает конкретно. Можно ли анимированные материалы из SD перенести в UE4?
so good for patient with insomnia
lol!! what do you mean? is she boring? lol..
@@rafaelsot01 No, they are claiming to be insomniac, someone who can't easily sleep and they are saying it's a good passtime when they are experiencing an episode of insomnia.
Thank you so much! You helped me a lot!
Great tutorial, unfortunately the current version no longer has a rotate_position node or something similar with a scale input.
Awsome
This was a huge help with my uni project, had no clue how to approach water - thank you!
Apart from Unreal....Will the animation work in other software like Maya?
this is super cool, thanks for sharing
Great video! Solved many problems I was having. 20:49 any reason not to use a gradient dial? 30:00 any reason not to just lerp between 0.21-0.21?
Amazing please more tutoriale like this is really helpfull i leran a from this chanelle
Better to use substance Alchemist
Please share the material
Veeery helpful! Thank you for sharing. A question tho. If I have a sprite sheet 6x6 and I want the chance to select which sprite I wanna use? Like selecting the column and the row to use a specific image. For example 3rd column and 4th row. I really don't know how to make the graph. I'm totally hopeless for math.
